VNA Care will honor three Heroes in Health Care at the organization’s 14th annual Gala on Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Mandarin Oriental, 776 Boylston St., Boston. The Gala is VNA Care’s signature fundraising event and has raised millions in essential funding for home health and hospice care in Massachusetts. Presenting Sponsors are Corridor Group and Homecare Homebase. Joshua and Amy Boger are serving as the Fund the Mission Chairs.

This year’s Heroes are (pictured, from left) Tony Coles, MD, who was appointed in September as CEO of Pfizer neuroscience spinout Cerevel Therapeutics; Steven Strongwater, MD, president & CEO of Atrius Health; and Patricia Joyce, RN, community nurse with VNA Care.

Dr. Coles is being honored for his impressive impact in growing neuroscience drug discovery. At Cereval, formed in 2018 through a partnership between Bain Capital and Pfizer, six new clinical trials could drastically improve outcomes for patients with epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, psychosis and addiction. Coles is also a founding investor and serves as executive chairman of Yumanity Therapeutics. Prior to co-founding Yumanity Therapeutics, Dr. Coles was chairperson and chief executive officer of Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc., which was acquired by Amgen in late 2013.

Dr. Coles currently serves on the board of directors of McKesson Corporation and Regeneron and is a member of the board of trustees for Johns Hopkins University. He is also a member of the Council for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC amongst others.

Dr. Steven Strongwater is being honored for his leadership on population health, value-based care and returning joy to the practice of medicine. As President and CEO of Atrius Health, Dr. Strongwater leads 6,800 employees serving 745,000 patients across eastern Massachusetts and has helped make Atrius Health a national leader in delivering high-quality, patient-centered, coordinated, cost effective care to every patient served. Dr. Strongwater currently serves on the Mass Digital Health Council, IBM Watson Advisory Board, Janssen Healthcare Innovators Council, Healthcare Executives Network, and Zetema Project.

Patricia Joyce, RN, is the first VNA Care clinician to receive a Heroes in Health Care Award. Joyce has devoted her career to helping others, first as a nurse in the hospital setting and then caring for patients in their homes as a community health nurse for VNA Care in Boston. Joyce was nominated by her colleagues for the honor because she embodies what it means to be a visiting nurse.
